6A Miranda Magpies
A beautiful sunny morning to start our season. After 20 seconds, we all thought we were in for a long game after Miranda scored. However, that woke all the boys up and they all played really well from that point on for a well deserved win. Everyone contributed. Matthew and Adam were great in defence and Julian and Jordan controlled the middle of the field for us. Antonio scored some nice goals up front whilst Alex was speedy up and down the wings. But the thing that was best about the game was teamwork, There was some really nice passing and it was great to see the boys being unselfish and setting each other up so well. Well done boys for a great effort.
6D Heathcote

6D played against Heathcote at Heathcote oval. The boys played well for their first match together. The match was a draw 7-7. Special mention goes to Lewis Holmewood for scoring 6 goals and Nathan Shaw for scoring 1 goal.

Man of the match was Lewis Holmewood.

6H

What an exciting introduction to the great game of soccer.

Our team played their first match ever, and it was superb.

There were Menai goals by Steven, Jonathan, Brodie, Marcus, Adam and even the other team.

There was fantastic defence work by Marcus, Adam and Grace, and there was determination by everyone.

Well done Steven, player of the match!

7E St. Patricks
Well it’s the start of a new season & all the boys seemed very excited about playing together as a team for the first time. Menai kicked of and the boys where straight into it, all eager to get that ball into the net,

St Pats took the first real shot at goal & it was brilliantly saved, well done, Our boys cleared the ball & chased it all the way to the other end, every player must have touched it at least once on the way to St Pats goal, From this point on the ball changed ends numerous times with St Pats scoring twice in the first half. Menai came out in the second half & with in a short time scored our first goal for the season great team work guys.  Menai started to work together both passing the ball & defending & with a few more shots at goal from both teams with no result the second half was over. Well done boys on a great first game, with a few more training sessions & a couple more games Menai 7E’s will be a great team.

8A Sylvania Heights
All the boys played some excellent football on a very warm day.  With the majority of play in the 1st half in  our attacking zone  it took a combination of good goal keeping from Sylvania  and some bad luck to keep us from scoring. An excellent cross from Nick saw the ball millimeters away from  being  headed in by Mitchell. Ethan and Alex both played well and made some excellent saves in goal. Tommy was dangerous every time he got the ball and his determination was rewarded with a goal after a great tackle and pass from Max "Toni". Well done to Daniel , Jad and Mitchell who chased hard and never stopped trying. This week's man of the match was Nick , who made several strong runs and controlled the ball well. There were a lot of positives that came out of the match and  it was obvious that  as the boys get used to each others style of play and work hard on keeping there shape they will continue to improve.

8B Como West-Jannali

The boys’ first game on Saturday 27th March was played with great enthusiasm and even though they were beaten by the Como West Jannail team they showed great

Spirit and potential and given their coach Tony some areas for development.  All the parents were proud of the boys’ efforts and look forward to their next game.

8C

The 8C's were off to a flying start in the opening match of the season. It was a 3-0 victory due to great team work and spectacular goals.Jason opened the scoring after flying down the right wing. Corey and Daniel then added to the score board with a couple of brilliant goals. Luke's solid performance detered any hopes the redbacks had at scoring. Aston,Brohden,Lucas and Kosta all worked tirelessly in attack and defence to make it a great team effort.

8F Lilli Pilli

Season 2010 greeted us with a nice balmy morning with Team 8F full of energy and enthusiasm. First half Lauren played goaly with great success not letting a single goal in and even catching a high ball stretching way up in the sky. Aaron, our pocket rocket, scored the first goal of the season to great delight from his team members and the crowd. Second half BenD took his turn at goaly and he was really stretched as Lilli Pilli threw all they had at him. BenD put his body on the line but a few balls snuck through. Aaron managed to score another goal that was certainly a team effort getting great help from Linden and BenN. Some great attacking from Janan, Jasmine and Ashlee kept Lilli Pilli scrambling to try and score. BenN thought it might help to take out Lilli Pilli's subs with one almighty kick but they battled on. Overall a great team effort with everyone looking forward to a Fantastic season ahead. Go 8F's..

9A Gwawley Bay

What a start to the 2010 season with a tough win in hot difficult conditions. The boys played well together and it was great to see everyone there cheering the boys. Bailey got us of to a great start with a cracker of a goal followed by a brilliant left foot goal by Stefan. Leading 2 – 0, Gwawley Bay struck back with 2 quick goals which Dani tried his best but was unable to save. At 2-2 the boys dug deep and with some fantastic passing, Stefan sealed the win with a great goal that the keeper had no chance of saving. Zac and Joel were solid in defence hardly letting a ball through, Denise and Ryan M were tactical up front and worked well together with Ryan B solid in the centre of the park. Dylan proved a problem for the opposition being everywhere they didn’t expecting him to be.

Well done boys, great effort and a well deserved win.

9B

9B's had a great first match! Isaiah scored 2 goals within the first 10 minutes of the game followed by Jake scoring 1 in the second half. Max and David did a great job in goals this week while Dean, Kyle and Brock played an extremely strong game. All boys played an excellent game and played really well as a team. They day was very hot and we lost 4-3. Kai was on holidays this week and we look forward to him joining the fun in our next game.

9D Bosco

For a very hot and hazy morning our feisty team put up a fine effort against a very determined Bosco.

Kris and Joshua had their first competition game of soccer and played like professionals. Kris showed fancy footwork and great kicks and Joshua’s 2nd half as GK kept the opposition on guard, this with his continued enthusiasm earned him player of the match.

Kieran showed some very determined tackling and many fine runs. Jerome’s fast pace was hard to keep up with, and Lochie’s 1st half GK and great kicking showed real effort.

Our pocket rocket Ryan ran hard through the game and Harrison’s determination supported his team mates well – particularly in helping James score our first goal for the season. .James followed up his goal with many brilliant runs down the field.

Great sportsmanship boys. A fine effort from you and our coach, Mark.. Great start to the season.

Alison Bowmer – proud mum

10A Barden Ridge

I don’t know how many chances we had to score in the first 10 minutes. It was one of those games, that if you don’t take you chances, the opposition will punish you. Menai dominated the play in the first quarter of each half, but could not manage to finish them off. Barden Ridge played a great game.

We need to talk to each other on the field and hold our positions. Deanna received our MOM award for her continued determination in defence.

13A
Our first game of the season was an encouraging one. The team played with determination and tenacity, with every player giving their best effort. With a 1-1 score line at half time the team went out in second half scoring two quick goals (Andrew & Matt). Peter was given the Encouragement award for his brilliant runs down the side line and Andrew had a blinder this week scoring two goals and was deservedly rewarded with the MOM award.  Well done.  Won 3 – 2
13D Lilli Pilli

13D VS LILLI PILLI – WIN 3-0

What a great way to start the season. All the boys put in a fantastic effort today, even with the heat and no reserves! This team is really starting to gel together. Some great defence today by Joshua, Jordan D, Ryan, Marcus and Mitchell kept the ball away from our goal. Great passing gave the forwards Nathan, Luke, Jacob and Jordan T many opportunities at scoring. Goalie Dean was kept busier in the second half and made some good saves. Some great crosses by Nathan today that would have made the score line much bigger if they had have found the back of the net. Keep up the great work guys!

14B Como West-Jannali

After weeks of preparation and training, the football season finally got under way…and what a way to start with a 10-1 victory over Como. The win though wasn’t as easy as what the score sheet says. After 20 minutes the scores were locked at 1 all…Como had just equalized and the game was on. Good work by all the boys in the lead up to half time though, resulted in 3 goals in 5 minutes…so we went to the break 4-1 up. Our great team work flowed into the 2nd half and we put the result beyond doubt with 6 more goals…A great effort boys….The day though, didn’t start well for young Darius, who opened his kit bag only to realize he had forgotten his boots at home (lesson to all you boys – prepare your gear the night before)..Thankfully Angelo was able to rush home (as good dads do) and retrieve the boots….but due to the delay, meant that Darius started the game from the bench. We only had 12 players for this match as Zac was away, and Connor is currently unavailable due to injury (get well soon)…We still have a bit of work to do (ie throw ins, support play etc), but that will all fall into place with Johns coaching (right John)..Also not often that you get 2 hat tricks in the one game, so congratulations to Andrew (5) and Jacob (3) for your efforts…and well down to Johnny and Darius for scoring 1 each……Now boys remember its not who scores the goals but its “how we score them”…and for that reason I must once again applaud the team for the all round effort…My man of the match award this week goes to Ryan – His involvement in the game was fantastic, and he played to the coaches instructions. Well done mate. For the record, there will be a player of the year award this year, and the way it will work is that the Coach, Manager, and one parent/family will give me a 3-2-1 vote each week…I will keep all the voting secret and this will be announced at the end of the year…..For a bit of fun, we will also have the most “Memorable moment award”……This award could go to a player, coach or parent so all watch out….Nominations this week include: Darius – for forgetting his boots; Giorgio – for his 40 metre shot on goal that just missed; Johnny – for arriving 10 minutes late, and as he walked into the dressing sheds was still fixing his hair (and by the end of the game the hair was still perfect); Donna Geaney – for instructing Paul (her husband) to stop coaching the kids (please refer to previous correspondence from manager in regards to parents not coaching from the sideline) – all Paul said was “Quickly throw it in”……..Yes that’s right, no one is safe from being nominated…….. A good start to the year, lets hope the jovial mood of the squad carries through for the remainder of the season.

14C Lilli Pilli

Great start to the season. The 14Cs in the main dominated the play - our goal came from the boot of Adam - with some luck we could have scored another 2 or 3 goals. We put together some very special passages of play, keeping the passes going, finding our man and making progress up the field. All players put in 100% effort. We need to work on tightening up the mid-field when defending and finishing off when attacking. Looks like the 14Cs could have a very satisfying season ahead of them.

15A Bangor

15A – Round 1 – Sat 27th Mar 2010 - Loss to Bangor 4-3

30+ degrees and a 12 noon kick-off for a hot local derby with our 15A’s up against fierce local rivals Bangor. And what a great game it was for the first game of the season. We scored three excellent goals today. The first following a beautiful break and shot off the cross bar by Harry to be slotted home on the rebound by Liam. The second a great individual effort by Jordan dribbling past three or four defenders to bury the ball in the net and the third a screamer by Aidan from outside the box that flew in off the under-side of the cross-bar. The only problem being that in between they managed to score four! That said there was enough on show today for Maurice our coach to be comfortable that we are going to be competitive this season and with a bit of application we will again be up there challenging for a finals spot. Ryan our goalie did really well today commanding his area and coming out to smother any ball that penetrated our defence. The back four of (on rotation) Alex, Sam, David, Josh T, Mark and Daniel L starting to gel together, In midfield Tom, Josh I, Aidan, Dillon, Adam put together some nice moves and played the ball around well. Up front Harry, Daniel B, Liam and Jordan constantly kept up the pressure on the Bangor defence. Well played boys – a really close game between two closely matched teams that could have gone either way. Our first victory is not far away!

35G Heathcote

35G Menai v Heathcote – Win 5-1

After many months of planning, recruiting (and decruiting) and intense off-season training it was great to be on the field again for another year. Even more pleasing was the sight of last year’s Players’ Player, Johnny Cash, making his grand entrance in the famous Safari Suit, much to the delight of all. In hot conditions, it was a good battle at first until Mel broke the deadlock with a nice goal – unfortunately, it went past our stunned Keeper, to give H’cote the early lead. Simmo levelled up the score after some nice work by Mickey Goggles to go into the break at 1-1. In the first half there were several highlights, including some fine runs by Dasher and skilful moves by Havier, while Niley led by example with some strong play. In the second half we ran all over H’cote, who tired quickly. There were so many opportunities, with Mickey finishing off one attack on goals by thrusting his gut at the ball to help it over the line. Too Tall then had a great little period, slotting in 2 very nice goals after beating a few opponents. Meanwhile, Johnny pulled off a great save of a spot penalty (well, the guy did miss, so technically he can claim it as a save). The twins up front (Tony & Pete) created plenty of space with some good runs, and this allowed Stubbsy (welcome back from semi-retirement) and Allan to produce some fine attacking moves. Wiz and Scotty were under pressure at times at the back, but played smart and safe when needed, no doubt encouraged by the presence on the field of out Club Director Of Coaching – aka The DOC. Finally, JP, who worked very hard all game with some excellent runs, was rewarded late with a fantastic goal from outside the box – well done. Congrats to Mel for leading the goal scoring tally – for H’cote. I hear they voted him POM. So, it was a strong win to kick off the season. We were a bit rusty at times, and there were plenty of missed shots on goal, but there are positive signs for a successful year. Good stuff, G Farce, I mean G Force.

Mark Simpson

PL01 Gwawley Bay

A good solid start to the year, the boys played well Tommo outstanding, leading goal scorer with two beautifully placed headers, Morgs the other after some deft passing, Sip let his presence be felt with first tackle, Enzo looking good, Disco waited for his chance to hit the dance floor, Macca handled the fines superbly, Pilgs swept up anything lying loose aboot the hoose and Greg kept the midfield intact.

The Coach he had a quiet one

JW13B Marton

What an exciting start to the season. Thanks to all the parents who gave up their lie-ins and wrestled with their GPS’s. We were entertained by some fantastic attacking play from Deanna, Zoe and Yasmin and 2 very good goals from Sarah H and Nikki. Excellent midefield play and defending from Maddy, Sara, Courtney, Samer, Sarah P. Tasmin, Taylor and Jessica meant that it was a very close game. 2-2 until the final minute when Marton just managed to score. Congrats to our goalies Zaynab and Eloise (now minus a tooth!) Well done girls – a very encouraging first game.

JW16B Cronulla Seagulls

W16B MENAI WIN 4-1 Vs Cron Seagulls

ALways nice to start the season with a win and what a great game the girls played today. Nice Sunday morning, not too early, and the girls started really well. Got a bit hot in the second half and the girls seemed to tire, but its the 1st game and to be expected. Two early girls from Sam, brilliantly set up by her team with some fantastic passes really put us in good position. Half time score was 2-0 our way. We came out in the 2nd ready to go and Briony put away a fantastic goal (1st ever) which really secured our win today. I think if Cronulla scored early in the 2nd half it would have been a really tight game, as they definatley came out firing in the 2nd half.  Great goal Briony you had a fabulous game! Cronulla Seagulls then retaliated with a goal and it was 3-1. Tony said the passing today was the great, we basically started the season playing the way we did at the end of last which means we are going to be a team to be reckoned with. I believe we will go really well in the State Cup also. Final goal scored by AG was a firing low shot from way out - well done AG. This finalised a very good game of soccer today and well deserved 4-1 WIN.

JW18D Georges River

W16D V Georges River. WIN 5-1

Welcome back Ladies & welcome to the gang Jasmin, Erica & Kirsty. A tough start to the season- a gazillion degrees & a little under done for our first game but at least we had 12 players. GR found themselves in a well known position to us, scratching for players & unfortunately only 8 made the pitch but a very courageous 8 they were. Britt volunteered for Keeper duties & had a wonderful 1st 1/2, including raw intimidation of their penalty taker, only to see the Ref. give her another go,  15 min. 0-1. The Ladies stuck to the plan & looked especially good when they Pass-Support-TALKED. Erica who had a crash course in defending before kick off was outstanding & amongst everything until 20min. in her left Quad decided enough was enough. Back to 11 but the Reverse call (we've got a bit used to this) worked well, sharing the pain in very trying conditions. Finally a great ball from the back by Jaymee, found Kirsty who placed a great pass to Lamees in the box, who drilled a shot rattling the net, 30 min.1-1. Not long after Loren ripped a great shot, too hot for the Keeper, leaving Jaymee a simple tap over the line, 2-1. 1/2 Time -Nice Stuff.

The second 1/2, just as hot with every Lady on the pitch really playing hard but doing it tough in the heat. It was Hot just watching. 3 min. in & more strong work by Kirsty in the mid, released a great ball to set Jaymee on her way & what a finish, all be it a trusty toe poke, 3-1. The GR Ladies kept battling on & created a few chances but Keeper 2, in the sequence, Jasmin was as solid as in goal, giving the Ladies plenty of confidence. The battle continued but the heat was really taking it's toll, especially on the GR Ladies, who just refused to give up but their legs were less willing to comply. More great P-S-T by the Ladies got rewarded when again a great pass from Kirsty, found Georgia who ripped a shot, parried by the Keeper & put away by Jaymee, 4-1 (2.5 goals for Jaymee). Finally a wide ball from Jaymee, found Sam who hit a high, curling, dropping shot that dropped under the x-bar, 5-1. A fantastic start Ladies but we must appreciate ( better than most) the effort of the brave 8 GR Ladies. However we toughed out the conditions & took most of our chances, Gotta be happy with that. Strong games across the park today, everyone had memorable moments. The Ball Buster Award today was a real toughy but had to go with our Rock-all Game at Stopper, no Reverse of demand & just kept on giving her all-Madi Thanks & welcome to Ray Polock, our 2010 W18D Manager-Cheers Mate, I know we'll all give Ray our support. Top of the table or there abouts Ladies-Good Stuff.

We're Menai Hawks & We Play As One!
